The buttons across the top are quick searches that limit the view to records that start with the letter indicated. The filter view lets the user further reduce the selection of records to college teams,pro teams or foreign leagues.
The buttons down the left side of the window allow the user to Search, Add, Modify and at the bottom of the window, Delete Records. That weird control above the trash can was added later in development and obviously doesn't fit the 'look'.
